Advocacy Efforts

The Georgia Society of Professional Society and the National Society of Professional Engineers assert that in the practice of engineering, the safety, health, and welfare of the public is of paramount importance.

GSPE seeks to influence state, regional, and local governmental entity decisions impacting the safety, health, and welfare of the public and the ability of professional engineers to carry out their duties.

GSPE is an organization of engineering professionals and should not be confused with other entities that advocate on the behalf of engineering firms, manufactures, or those motivated by commercial interests. Our advocacy is motivated by the previously stated dedication to the public health, safety and welfare. This commitment is embodied in the Georgia statute that regulates the practice of Professional Engineering (Official Code of Georgia Annotated § 43-15-1).

Our cannon of ethics stipulates that communications will be objective and truthful and also stipulates that deceptive acts are to be avoided (https://www.nspe.org/resources/ethics/code-ethics).

The GSPE state board of directors has taken the following actions:

  • GSPE authorizes certain lobbying efforts in support of the GSPE core value of the health, safety, and welfare of the public. Roger Grabman, PE is appointed as a volunteer lobbyist to the state and local agencies and entities. http://108.167.164.127/~wamlk2ngooc4/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/GSPE-BOD-Resolution-advocacy-210119a-scaled.jpg
  • The January 2021industrial accident in a Gainesville poultry processing plant was tragic. GSPE, in its dedication to promoting the health, welfare, and safety of the public, offers itself as a resource to legislators in order to facilitate informed discussions on technical issues. http://108.167.164.127/~wamlk2ngooc4/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Email-to-GA-Legislators-2-5-2021.pdf
  • GSPE endorses the 2021 Georgia House of Representatives Bill 476: Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors Act of 2021. This bill would reorganize the PELS Board as an independent agency with its own staffing and finances. This will greatly improve the ability of the PELS Board serve the public to perform its duties to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public. This bill did not pass before the end of the 2021 legislative session. However, it will begin again in the Senate Regulated Industries Committee in January 2022. http://108.167.164.127/~wamlk2ngooc4/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/GSPE-BOD-Resolution-3-3-21.jpg
