GSPE PDH Day – Critical lift of historic Rogers Bridge over the Chattahoochee River

Rogers Bridge, built in the early 1900’s over the Chattahoochee River in the northern suburbs of Atlanta was removed and later dismantled using a single crane critical lift to make way for a replica pedestrian-friendly bridge between Gwinnett and Fulton counties.

This project presented several challenges for the demolition of the almost 115-year old, 228-foot truss ranging from
environmental constraints and the critical structural condition of over 90% of its members, to limitation on the capacity and
availability of the lifting cranes.

This session discusses the development and execution of the critical lift plan with focus on the construction engineering.

About Amrithraj Anand, PE, Structural Project Engineer

I am a Structural Engineer at Heath and Lineback Engineers Inc. with a focus on Bridge Design. I specialize in the design of steel structures, construction engineering, and finite element modeling. The wide range of projects I work on vary from design of standard pedestrian and highway – steel and prestressed concrete beam bridges and the analysis of sharply skewed and curved steel I girder bridges to specialized work in construction engineering such as shoring tower design, crane lift planning, formwork design, erection and demolition analysis, temporary retaining wall design, bridge jacking, and ABC methods.

I’m passionate about STEM education and widening its access to all communities and am involved with ASCE.
