Our topic this month will be SMART GRID AUTOMATION – Taking  Rural Electric Reliability to the Next Level.   In 2014, Carroll Electric Membership Cooperative (Carroll EMC) deployed its first distribution automation scheme. Since then, the electric utility has invested millions of dollars into smart grid automation infrastructure across its service territory spanning six west Georgia counties, increasing reliability by 38%. The cooperative is dedicated to providing reliable electric service to all its 55,000 members and continues to seek new and innovative ways to keep the lights on.

Jarrod Kilgore is a professional engineer and graduate of SPSU with over a decade of experience in the power industry. At Carroll EMC, he oversees System Engineering and the cooperative’s 24/7 Control Center. He champions reliability at the electric utility and plans for the future of Carroll EMC’s members and the West Georgia area.

Tyler Collins is a System Engineer at Carroll EMC and a graduate of SPSU/KSU. He is an EIT pursuing his PE in Power and has worked on various projects in the electric utility space.

Some of his expertise include electric vehicles and charging infrastructure, demand response,  and distribution automation.
